The Gathering Tree is a beautifully illustrated children's book about HIV/AIDS. Written by award-winning First Nations author Larry Loyie and co-author Constance Brissenden, it is a gentle, positive story of a First Nations family facing HIV. After eleven-year-old Tyler and his younger sister Shay-Lyn learn their favourite cousin Robert has HIV, they discover that knowledge brings understanding and self-awareness. Aspects of physical, spiritual, mental and emotional health are addressed.
Three goals were outlined for this Conference: 1. Increase the understanding of the principles of Health Promotion, Prevention and Population health among all sectors within Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH). 2. Engage VCH employees in the development of strategic plans to address specific health issues around Healthy Communities, Healthy Development and Healthy Living. 3. Building organization and individual capacity for VCH employees to integrate a Health Promotion, Prevention and Population Health approach into their daily practice.
Keynote speakers, including Dr. Ron Labonte of the University of Ottawa, emphasized the importance of population health and attendees participated in series of dialogue and strategy sessions on topics such as leadership, child development, injury prevention, and healthy eating.
